If I were you, I’d tell your friends about me.
A man is the sum of his experiences and memories. Emotional and temporal tipping points, this way, that way, define the course of our lives and shape who we are as people. ‘About me’ is a blurry mess of highs and lows and broken bones and embarrassing anecdotes about showing up at school with my shorts on backwards.
And since I can’t condense all that down to blurb form, I will simply do as everyone else does and list the things I like. Things like Pokémon and Doctor Who and reading books and playing video games and crying on the bus because I’ve reached a sad part of The Amber Spyglass or Mockingjay and taking sneaky photos of attractive men and scaring my friends with feminist rants and staying up late and then complaining about it and eating horrible food and taking baths.
Most of all though, I like to write, but as my creative writing lecturer says, “There’s a point where you can say ‘I’m a writer’ and not have your friends hear ‘I’m a wanker.’”
I’m not there yet.
